Administer SYNTHROID at least 4 hours before or after drugs known to interfere with SYNTHROID absorption see DRUG INTERACTIONS. The goal is to achieve steady TSH levels within the appropriate therapeutic range. Additional laboratory testing and clinical findings may be necessary.

It’s important to always take your medication exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

Stop biotin and biotin-containing supplements for at least 2 days prior to thyroid testing. Inquire whether patients are taking biotin or biotin-containing supplements. Serum digitalis glycoside levels may decrease when a hypothyroid patient becomes euthyroid, necessitating an increase in the dose of digitalis glycosides. Addition of SYNTHROID therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus may worsen glycemic control and result in increased antidiabetic agent or insulin requirements. Carefully monitor glycemic control, especially when thyroid therapy is started, changed, or discontinued see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS. Pseudotumor cerebri and slipped capital femoral epiphysis have been reported in pediatric patients receiving levothyroxine therapy.

Drugs That May Decrease Conversion of T4 to T3

SYNTHROID® (levothyroxine sodium) tablets, for oral use is a prescription, man-made thyroid hormone that is used to treat a condition called hypothyroidism in adults and children, including infants. It is meant to replace a hormone that is usually made by your thyroid gland. Generally, thyroid replacement treatment is to be taken for life. SYNTHROID should not be used to treat noncancerous growths or enlargement of the thyroid in patients with normal iodine levels, or in cases of temporary hypothyroidism caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis).

Current Medications:

It may take several weeks before your body starts to respond to Synthroid. Synthroid works best if you take it on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and try to take the medicine at the same time each day.

Grapefruit juice may delay the absorption of levothyroxine and reduce its bioavailability. Monitor serum free-T4 levels and maintain in the upper half of the normal range in these patients. Do not store the crushed tablet/water mixture and do not administer it mixed with foods that decrease absorption of levothyroxine, such as soybean-based infant formula. Synthroid is a prescription medicine used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is given when your thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own.
